So, the seven were all together in Lourdes, France. They were to travel to the first stop on the Camino on Friday, June 13th.
Tom wrote on June 12th:
Appears French rail strike still on till Friday evening Paris time. We will get to train station Fri morning by 7:00 for 7:30 train and play it by ear.
The next I heard was:
Arrived St Jean Pied-de-Port [in France]. Took taxi from Lourdes. Fare 270 euros. [about $366 dollars. Divided by 7 people, that’s 52 dollars each for about 94 miles.] We gave 30 euro tip. Taxi was almost exactly the price of seven train tickets (before tip).
Much confusion at Pilgrim Welcome Office as we misunderstood each other about arrangements for tonight. Helped greatly when we discovered they spoke Spanish. Whew. We are settled in the Refuge Municipal (Auberge [French for hostel or inn]) for tonight at St. Jean Pied-de-Port. Siesta time now. Will look for dinner starting at 730pm then sleep. Up at crack of dawn for quick breakfast at 615 or so at Refuge then start hiking to Valcarlos. Probably stop for food along way.
